YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK

What do your thoughts say about you?

“The mind is everything. What you think you become,” said Buddha.

In the same way that you’ve heard that “You are what you eat,” you are what you believe.

So, if we are what we think, it seems pertinent don’t you think that we become mindful of each passing thought bubble that crosses our minds?

Consider for a moment the song your inner DJ plays from the moment you wake up in the morning through to when you nestle your head on the pillow of an evening.

There are somewhere in the vicinity of 500,000 – 700,000 thoughts bouncing around in your brain in any one day. That’s 35-48 per second! Whoa nelly, that’s A LOT.

With this much activity happening at any one moment, the quality of your thoughts are what we want to focus on in this article.

How often do these thoughts come to mind?

“I’m not good enough”

“I can’t do that”

“I am XYZ”…

Perhaps more often than you actually realise.

Some forty years ago, Dr. Maxwell Maltz wrote a ground-breaking book called Psychocybernetics. Maltz coined the term “self-image” as a view we each have about ourselves, including our limitations and capabilities. Maltz explained that we can neither outperform nor underperform what you believe to be true.

So what do you believe to be true about you? What thoughts do you hold close that are shaping your day-to-day reality?

In the last decade, further developments in neuropsychology have concluded that we have the power to change our thoughts and thereby, change our lives.

Try our suggestions! Take the lead on what you are thinking so you can take the lead on the life you are living:

NO1

Wake up with a resolve to stay happy during the day

Sip on tea. Listen to the birds. Go for a walk. Start happy to stay happy.

NO2

Your body is your temple, honour it

There is a close relationship between the mind and the body. Move your body daily and fuel it with healthy foods to keep you in tip-top shape, mentally and physically.

NO3

Find stillness and focus

Whether you meditate or not, it really doesn’t matter. Make it a daily ritual to sit, connect and relish in stillness.

NO4

Appreciate what you have

Appreciate and enjoy everything you already have. As Lao Tzu says, “If you realise that you have enough, you are truly rich.”

  1. Love this post DG team! I write and speak about the same thing. The power of helpful thinking is incredible.

Can you please share a reference to the research you mention about the number of thoughts? Would love to check it out. Thanks!
