AN INTERVIEW WITH SEILA CHAPMAN

Seila Chapman became empathetic to human suffering as a result of the pain she experienced growing up.

Since then, she has channeled the challenges of her childhood — and her curiosity about the mind and human behaviour —into her remarkable work today as a transformation coach, speaker and writer.

Recently, we were lucky enough to have Seila in our Guru interview hot seat, where she reflected on the many ways she creates change in people’s lives.

Her joy is palpable.

The best part of my job is…

Being a source of inspiration and motivation for people is very exciting to me. Being able to create change in people’s lives and to witness their transformation gives me true joy. I get to express my many talents in varied ways like teaching, speaking, and writing. I believe the best is yet to come!

I chose to enter this field of work because…

I had a very difficult childhood. I had to grow up and overcome childhood challenges with very little help. I became very empathetic to human suffering as a result of my own pain.

I was very lonely as a child. I lived inside my head a lot. This isolation spurred my curiosity about the mind and human behavior. I was curious about my thoughts. I pondered what the point of all my feelings was, what stirs me, and what makes me laugh, feel appreciated or loved. I explored what I value and what is important to me. These complex questions entered my realm of thinking at an early age and I have used them on my journey of self-discovery ever since.

One of my gifts is my rapport with people both in my personal life and professional life. The people that I know feel that they can share anything with me. I noticed that I was continually becoming better at helping others reach insights and revelations about themselves. I was the person that people would come to for advice and solutions.

I felt a deep calling after I gave birth to my daughter. It is amazing how children have a way of pushing us to confront our own truths. I discovered Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Coaching. NLP is the study of human behavior and success strategies derived from positive psychology. Everything just clicked. I honestly believe that everything I had ever experienced was preparing me for where I am today.

My desires and goals are to inspire and motivate others to overcome their fears and their disempowering beliefs, to enable them to take control of their lives, to show them how to develop a winning mind set and express their individual greatness.

The greatest challenge in my career has been…

I get caught up in the journey, the chase and the work too often, whilst trying to balance my personal life and my work with others. Trying to achieve a work-life balance caused me a lot of stress and impacted my health and relationships.

I discovered there is no such thing as work-life balance. I needed to make changes. I overcame this by learning to prioritise. I learned that success was not sacrificing one part of my life for the others. Success was a matter of doing what needed to be done at the right moment. For example, if your partner needs attention right now, then drop your business activities and go to them. If your business is falling apart, then give it attention. Success is about focusing on what needs my attention the most in that moment.

The funniest misconceptions about my industry/company/brand are….

I want to eliminate the myth that coaching is only for people who do not have their lives in order. This idea is completely untrue. Every successful person has a coach or has had one. I have a business coach. Coaching is for everyone — from executives to stay at home mothers. Organisations like Google, Apple, NASA, and the BBC have coaches and implement excellent coaching programs for their employees.

A coach might come in the form of someone who has achieved what you want to achieve or someone with experience and real insight into human behaviour and motivation who can help you work out exactly what you want and need to do and how to get there. A talented coach will unlock your potential and give you the specific tools you need to create success. Having someone to champion you and believe in you is very powerful in creating extraordinary results. You do not need coaches. You are perfect just as you are. Coaches are there to help you get your head clear and make the greatness you have to offer happen faster.

The most influential person in my career has been…

Savannah, my daughter. I am raising her to be her best. The only way I can do that is to consistently give my best efforts both personally and professionally. Children are watching our every move. What we say and what we do or do not do will influence how they feel about themselves and who they will become in the future. As long as I continually take my life to the next level and grow both personally and professionally, my daughter will follow this example. She will have the wisdom, attitude and skills to live a great meaningful life. I believe with all my heart that the best gift you can give to another human being is your personal growth.

If I could give one piece of advice to my 18-year-old self, it would be….

Be true to yourself and believe in yourself. Live your life with purpose, meaning and humility even in the face of great adversity. Have fun. Do not hang out with those who are cynical about your vision and do not believe in you. People like that are contagious.

You can do anything and you will! Your biggest advocate must be you. Live passionately, turn it up, shake it up and stick it out!

My greatest achievement has been…

I had a vision and built my private coaching practice two years ago from the ground up whilst balancing a young family. Through all the ups and downs, the fears and doubts, the obstacles and challenges I pushed forward because I believed in myself and I believed in my vision. I had the courage to do it even if it felt like the hardest thing in the world to do at the time. Having it go from strength to strength and success to success is my greatest achievement. I am doing what I love and loving what I do.

The greatest personal challenge I have over come is…

Is there room for more than one?

Perfectionism is my greatest challenge. I think the word perfectionism has become fashionable these days. Perfectionism is a defense mechanism protecting us from the fear of being rejected or unloved and feeling not good enough. Perfectionism has served me greatly in many ways, like having high standards, but it was exhausting to keep up with the good and perfect behaviour I expected of myself all the time.

I was not expressing my authentic self. The frustrations negatively impacted my health and happiness.

I am more compassionate, patient and understanding towards myself these days. I embrace my imperfections. Loving who I am including my mistakes is what I have learned. If it were not for all the mistakes I have made I would not know so much. I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I do not take things personally anymore. Not everyone is going to like me or approve of what I do. That is just a fact of life. I cannot water down my thinking and behaviour just to be accepted because I will end up living in mediocrity. Whatever I do, it is enough. I am enough.

I don’t understand why…

There are climate change skeptics

I try to relax by…

Colouring, mindfulness and playing the piano

My biggest fear is…

Losing my memory

I can’t live without…

A good book, white Egyptian sheets and a moisturiser!

I really wish I had…

A personal assistant

The greatest lesson I have learnt is….

I learnt that relationships require work and that in any relationship the only person you can change is yourself.

If I had one super power, it would be….

Invisibility…need I say more

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be…

Leonardo Da Vinci, Steve Jobs, Thich Nhat Hanh, Princess Diana
