Embrace the situation you’re in

It’s okay to feel numb at first. You’ll think, ‘is this really happening to me?’ The disbelief and denial will likely lead to a sense of injustice. You’ll think, ‘why is this happening to me? This isn’t fair.’

When you accept that you can’t change the situation you’re in, you will no longer be a prisoner to it. You free yourself to deal the best you can with the challenge ahead of you.NO2

Be grateful

Gratitude is a potent tool for snapping yourself out of fear and self-pity. In almost any situation, you can find something—even if it’s the tiniest thing—to be grateful for. Whether it’s the warm sun, a phone call from an old friend or just another day of living, be grateful. Remind yourself that there are people that would trade their problems for yours in an instant.NO3

Actively let go

Danielle LaPorte says: “Active letting go is not to be mistaken for passive letting go, whereby life rips stuff out of your grip, or you paint yourself into a corner, or things get so heavy they stop you in your tracks and you have to ditch them just to carry on. Active letting go is a little more…pro-active. It’s a practice. It’s awake. It’s somewhat delightful (except for the agony of it.)”

As she explains, it’s going to be painful in varying degrees.NO4

Divert your attention

Focus on something or someone else. Give your mind and emotions a break. Escape for a while. Work on a hobby, babysit, go for a run, take yourself to the movies.NO5

Call your friends

Reach out to your friends and let them know what you’re going through. One kind, empathetic word can make all the difference.

Laugh

Just like crying, laughter is an emotional release. There’s humour to be found in any situation as long as you’re willing to look for it. Find that one isolated moment that is funny regardless of the terrible big picture.

Clarify and prioritise your life

Take an aerial view of your life and let the big questions simmer.

What’s the purpose of your life? What steps will you take to do what you want to do with your time? Big changes and challenges give you a gift—a fresh perspective to reassess your goals and your purpose. It takes time to process and heal, but the answers will become clear.
