5 WAYS TO EVALUATE YOUR USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

5-ways-to-use-social-media-WP

I love social media.

I love how it allows me to connect with people all over the world.

I love that I can use it to share my message and what’s important to me.

Social media — and what it enables us to do — truly is amazing.

However, it can also be overwhelming, frustrating and can consume our lives.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

B-1

I believe that we can use social media in a way that feels empowering to us. I also believe that it we can use it without letting it take over our entire lives!

When I decided to re-evaluate my relationship with social media I realised how awesome the various platforms are. By doing this, I recognised that it is possible to use social media in a positive way that works well for you and your life.

Here are 5 ways to help you use social media intentionally, in a way that works for you, without being overwhelmed or consumed by it.

NO1

Question if actually you want to use social media

Using social media is a choice — one that we each get to make.

It really is completely up to us if we use social media a little, a lot or at all.

I love this quote by Alexandra Franzen, who runs an online business without using social media (so yep, it is possible!).

“Here’s another interesting question to consider: “Is social media helping me to become the best version of myself?” If the answer is Yes (and it very well may be) then, carry on! Create. Share. Inspire. Entice. Rock on. But if the answer is No, that’s something worth pondering.”

I think it’s really important to actually check in and see if you really want to use social media, because and the end of the day, it really is up to you!

Questions to consider:

  • Do you really want to use social media?
  • Why do you want to use social media?
  • What platforms will help you serve this purpose?

NO2

Get clear on what you don’t like about the current way you use social media

I first decided to change my social media habits because I realised many of my social media habits were not serving me.

I didn’t like the amount of time I was wasting on it, how I would use it to procrastinate doing things that were actually important to me, how I was checking social media first thing in the morning and right before I went to sleep, and how I would turn to social media if I was feeling anxious or bored.

I knew that it was time to make a change when I realised I couldn’t even sit through a movie without picking up my phone — or wanting to.

I realised that I was spending more time scrolling social media than consciously living my life!

Questions to consider:

  • Is the way you’re currently using social media truly working for you?
  • What don’t you like about your current use of social media?
  • How much time are you spending on social media? Are you happy about that?
  • What makes you turn to social media?

NO3

Recalibrate by taking a break if you need to

If you feel like you’re really unhappy with your current use of social media, it can be really useful to take a break from it all together — for however long you feel you need to.

Stepping away from social media and giving yourself space to breath and live can help you get clear on why you want to make a change to your usage habits.

I find that disconnecting from social media helps me to reconnect to my life and when I return to using it, I can do so consciously.

Questions to consider:

  • Do you need to take a break from social media all together?
  • Why do you want to step away from social media?
  • How long do you want to step away from it for?

NO4

Determine how you want to use social media going forward

When you discover what parts of your social media use are not working for you, this will illuminate the way you actually want to use it.

For me, I realised I wanted to use social media to share my message and to serve and contribute in a positive way. I wanted to spend a lot less time on social media and only use it for a purpose. I wanted social media to work for me and I didn’t want to feel overwhelmed or consumed by it. And I also wanted to spend more time actually living my life than documenting my life.

Questions to consider:

  • How do you want to use social media going forward?
  • What purpose will social media serve in your life?
  • How can you use social media in a way that enhances your life?

NO5

Use social media the way you want to

Once you know how you want to use social media in your life (and how you don’t!), you can create social media boundaries and implement strategies to help you use it in a way that works for you.

Because it really is up to you how you use social media in your life. You don’t have to post things in-the-exact-moment that they happen. You don’t have to document every single thing you do. You don’t have to post every single day or be present on social media every day. You don’t have to do anything at all with social media — it’s totally up to you how you do and don’t use it!

Here are 7 ways I chose to use social media my way:

  • I make sure I create before I consume, meaning I get the important things I need to do done first before scrolling on social media.
  • I get clear on WHY I’m going on social media each time I use it.
  • I log out of every platform each time I finish use it, so every time I want to go on social media, I have to actually log into the platform.
  • I turn off all notifications as much as possible. I find for me that they’re unnecessary and overwhelming, plus they constantly prompt you to check your account.
  • I also limit the social media applications on my devices.
  • I use airplane mode on my phone to make it easier to not go on social media when I don’t want to get distracted.
  • I block social media sites completely most days so I can’t get distracted when working on the computer. You can use the Self-control app if you have a Mac and there are Windows options as well. Say goodbye to distractions and hello to productivity!
  • I also take advantage of scheduling social media for my business accounts ahead of time as much as I can, so I don’t have to manually do it every single time I want to post something.

Questions to consider:

  • How can you help yourself use social media in a way that works for you?
  • What tips from the list above do you want to implement and try out for yourself?
